Styling a console table well is like putting the icing on a cake. It is the final finishing detail that will make a world of difference. As an Interior Designer, I have styled many console tables over the years. There are a few steps that consistently work for me to ensure I end up with a beautiful table that balances the function needed while reflecting the style of the space.

Here are my 6 steps to styling a console table, which will put the finishing touch on your home and create the perfect atmosphere, whether welcoming people in your entryway or hiding extra cutlery in your dining room.
Console Table Styling
Choosing your console table

First things first, you will need to make sure that the console table you pick works well for your space and your needs. The table must fit comfortably within the room, as you do not want to overwhelm the space. Equally, you do not want a console that is too small for the space, as it will be lost and not create the impact you want. Another important thing to consider is the storage you will need in your console table. If you plan on using your console in your hallway or dining room, adding in some extra storage is a great idea, as this means things can be hidden away easily while still keeping the room looking beautiful.

Create a focal point

Hanging a larger piece above a console table will help create a focal point in the room. It will draw the eye to the table while balancing the rest of the pieces on it. In an entryway, especially if there is not a lot of light, a mirror is always a good piece to use as it will help bounce light around the room while also allowing you to check yourself out before you leave the house. Artwork is also an excellent choice for above a console table. Choosing a great piece of art will set the mood for the room as well as bringing some of your personality to the space. It could be a gallery wall or one big piece of art. Just make sure that it reflects the style of your home.

Add some storage

A console table with space underneath will make a room feel bigger as it will seem like a much lighter piece of furniture with a lot of space around it. Although this will make the room feel larger, you are compromised on the amount of storage within the room. Adding baskets or beautiful boxes underneath will help ground your console table and add additional storage to the space. You will want to ensure the baskets’ or boxes’ scale works well with the space underneath the console table. Too small, and they will get lost in the space. Too tall, and they will overwhelm the space. A good rule is to have two-thirds of the space taken up by the baskets and a third left to open space.

Play with height in the objects you choose

Okay, so let’s go on to styling the top of the table. The first thing to consider is working with the height of your pieces. Varying the height of the objects will create a more exciting tablescape and allow your eye to travel around the details more easily. Table lamps are a great way of adding height to a console table while also adding ambient light to a space. Adding a smaller vase or a bowl will add more detail to the overall design, while photo frames always add a personal touch.
Grouping things in threes is always a good idea, and this gives the eye a way of following the pieces around the console and makes the overall look more pleasing. By varying the height of the objects in the group, we can control what the eye will look at first. The eye will be drawn to the tallest piece first and then work its way down in height.
Depending on the size of the console table you are styling, you will likely need more than one grouping. A general rule is to have a grouping at each end with a low-level object, such as a bowl in the middle. This means there is some breathing room within the tablescape and will let your artwork or mirror be the focal point.

Add some greenery

Using greenery on your console table will add a welcoming element to the space. It doesn’t matter if it is real or faux greenery. Choose whichever works best with your lifestyle and space. Adding it to a console table brightens the room it is in and, in turn, makes the space feel cared for. A faux floral bouquet will make more of an impact than greenery and help create a focal point of the console table. If choosing and arranging flowers is not for you, there are many different places to buy pre-arranged bouquets, both faux and dried, that will last and can be changed between seasons, as well as different arrangements to suit all styles.

Add a scent

Our sense of smell can help conjure memories and create a feeling more than any other sense. Using a welcoming smell in your home can create an atmosphere that makes guests feel at home when they visit. It is also a great way to create a calm and relaxing feeling for yourself within your home. Diffusers are an easy way to add a scent to your home. Other than turning the sticks every now and then, you don’t have to do much else. They also make an excellent addition to a console table, and they can add more interest to the overall design. A candle is the way to go if you want to add a scent while creating a cosy atmosphere. There are so many different styles of candles, and there is sure to be one that will work with your interior scheme.
