Your Living Room furniture layout is so essential in modern life. Living Rooms can be cosy TV-watching spaces, formal seating rooms, children’s playrooms, Dining Rooms, and home working spaces. With so much to fit into them, the layout of living rooms can become a mess.

How often have you tripped over your kid’s toys to get to the sofa? Or found that when you finally sit down to watch TV, the sun is across the screen, and you miss the show? With a bit of thought, ensuring that your Living Room works for you is easy.
Here are 5 different Living Room furniture layouts to help you regain control of your living space.
Existing Living Room furniture layout
Before we look at the furniture layouts, there are a couple of things to consider.
Firstly think about how you use the room at the moment. What are the primary uses of the space? Are there any thoroughfares that are used consistently? What doesn’t work in the room? All this will help you find the best places to put furniture and what will be needed in the space.
Next is the focal point of the room. You will need to decide what you want this to be. An architectural feature like the fireplace, a bay window or the view out to the garden? Or the TV could be the focal point of the Living Room furniture layout.
Once you have the answers to these questions, you will start to be able to make decisions about the furniture layout for your Living Room. Take a look at the layouts below to understand the different ways to lay out your Living Room furniture.
TV Room furniture layout
In a living room where the TV is the focal point, it is best to think of the space as a media room and to adjust the furniture layout accordingly.

The first thing to get right is the position of the television. You don’t want to position it where sunlight will fall across it, and you also want to ensure everyone has a clear view of it. The easiest way to achieve this is to place the sofa on one wall with the TV on the other, with the TV being outside of direct sunlight. If the sun is still a problem, binds and curtains can help screen the sunlight when needed. Adding extra armchairs or sofas will balance the room. Although the space will feel cohesive, some seats will not have an ideal view of the TV.
Formal Seating Area furniture layout
A living room used for a more formal seating area using the fireplace is an excellent way of creating a focal point in the room that everything else can gravitate around.

The most important thing for a room like this is to create spaces to have conversations. This could be a sofa with armchairs, a small table with two cosy chairs, or perhaps both if you have room. Think about how you and guests might sit when they visit for a chat and work back from there. Then you know you will have a space that works well for you. As the TV is less important in a room like this, it is good to house it in built-in furniture to be put away when not in use.
Family Room furniture layout
A Living Room that is being used as a Family Room will need to be divided into different areas to ensure there are places for each function of the room.

Using a sectional sofa can be a great way to divide the room without creating too much of a boundary. One side of the room becomes a TV area, while the other can be a “play zone”. Within the play zone, be sure to add plenty of storage so toys and books can be stored away, although this doesn’t mean they will be! Adding a desk or table can be helpful for a children’s play table or for homework.
Living and Dining Room furniture layout
You will need to divide up the space in a Living Room that is also a Dining Room. They are two different spaces but will still need to be connected somehow.

Instead of using a sectional to divide up space, a rug or change in flooring can be used. This can mentally tell you that an area changes without doing anything that will separate the room too much. This will work well for spaces that are Living and Dining Rooms as they have very different functions. As a tip, keep the rug in the Living Room part of the space, making it much easier to clean up any spills. It is a good idea to place the dining table nearer to any windows. It will mean there is more light by the table and the TV area is not disturbed by any sunlight.
Working from home space furniture layout
While most of us work from home a lot more now, finding a comfortable place to work at home can be challenging. And can take time and effort to create. Incorporating your office space into a Living Room can be valuable to create a dedicated work-from-home area if space is an issue.

As before, using a sectional sofa is an easy way of separating the room. Built-in furniture can also be a great way to incorporate a work-from-home area into a Living Room. This can also be an easy way to create some distance from work at the end of the day, as it can all be shut away. Hiding your desk and office equipment within a piece of furniture means it will not dominate the room. A bookcase across from your desk creates a convenient place to store books and files while giving an excellent backdrop for all of those video calls.
