With working from home and hybrid working becoming much more popular, getting your Home Office setup right is crucial. But, creating a comfortable space where you can be productive is easier said than done.

Our spaces don’t always allow for the best Home Office setup. Over the past few years, desks have been squeezed into bedrooms, and Dining Room tables have been taken over with laptops and papers. It works for a while, but our spaces need a dedicated Home Office setup if home working is permanent.
Below are several ways to help your Home Office setup be a comfortable and productive space.
Home Office set-up tips
Find the right spot for your Home Office setup.
Set your Home Office space up in a room where you will be the most productive and away from distractions. Living in a small flat could make this tricky, but having somewhere you can walk away from at the end of the workday can help you separate your work and home life. If a whole room isn’t possible for you, hiding your home office desk in a cabinet can be a good way of hiding your work so you can create a work-life balance.
You have your space now to find a desk.
Sitting at your desk all day can be uncomfortable if the setup is wrong, so it must be correct to ensure you can get through the whole day comfortably. You must ensure your computer screen is at eye level while sitting at your desk and looking straight ahead. This could mean raising the height of your monitor with a stack of books or buying a laptop stand to adjust the screen’s height.
When choosing your desk, it is essential that it fits well within your space but also that it has enough space and storage for everything you need. Any desk over 1m long will work. Anything smaller than that, and you will need more workspace. Make sure that there is storage underneath for all your essentials. This can be integrated or separated if you need more space.

Make sure your chair is comfortable.
Next to think about is a comfy chair. It will need a high back to give you enough support and be height adjustable so the seat’s level can ensure you can sit at the correct height. Having your feet on the floor with your knees and hips at a 90-degree angle is best.
You will need a chair with enough padding to be comfortable. But also a material that will make it durable and look good for years. Leather is an excellent choice for an office chair.

Out of sight, out of mind
Storage in a Home Office cannot be overrated. Making sure everything is organised and tidy can make you much more productive. A simple way to do this is to have a desk with built-in storage underneath, like the ones I have shown above. Storage boxes could be the way to go if space is an issue. They can be brought out for use and sit tidily in the corner until needed. If you have the space, a bookcase is also a great way to go. They are a convenient place to store books and files while giving an excellent backdrop for all video calls. A shelving unit will work equally well, but make sure there is a place to hide away anything you don’t want to be seen.

Light it up!
Getting your lighting right is essential to help reduce eyestrain and ensure you are comfortable. The best lighting is natural daylight, so sitting near a window is best. But task lighting is the next best thing if that is not an option. The best way to do this is to put a table lamp on your desk. It is also a good idea to have some ambient lighting. This is so the rest of the room is comfortably lit to try and reduce eyestrain. A fabric or jute lampshade will softly diffuse the light to create a cosy atmosphere while also helping you see everything more clearly. A metal lampshade will give a modern feel to the room. These types of shade are best used with a table lamp.

Colours in a Home Office matter.
Different colours can reflect different moods. The best way to create a workspace you want to stay in is to keep the colours calming. So even when work is getting hectic, you can remain calm. Blues and green are the best colours to introduce for a calming effect. An analogous colour palette will also make the space feel relaxed. When you are pulling everything together for the room, remember that colour palettes can be changed by the accessories you choose, not just the room’s colour. Plants are also an excellent way to make a space feel more pleasant.

Don’t forget to decorate your Home Office.
You will spend a lot of time there, so make sure your Home Office is somewhere you want to be. Decorating your Home Office with artwork or photos that mean something to you is one way to get meaning into your chosen decorations. A cushion or blanket will add to the cosy effect and ensure you are warm after sitting still for so long. It will also add some softness to the room and help bring texture or pattern into the space. Rugs are perfect for including in a Home Office as they can tie a scheme together very well. A rug can also help with the room’s acoustics on video calls. Wool is a beautiful material to use to make a room warmer. It can also help to give the space a timeless feel, whilst using materials such as velvet can make a room feel more luxurious.
